Getting Round the city:
The historic centre is not particularly large (only 2.5km from the Colosseum
to Piazza di Spagna) and is so easy to visit on foot, especially as most
monuments are to be found in the same area. Walking is the best way to
explore the city as it allows you to make your own programme of visits
with shopping or stops along the way for refreshments.
Look out for both the small yellow signs that show the best routes between
the sites of interest and the green signs indicating the best route to
follow for the major monuments.
If walking does not appeal to you you can always rent a car, although it’s
worth mentioning that you should expect to hear horns and to be overtaken
on both sides!
You could always avoid traffic jams by renting a moped. Helmets are not
obligatory, but your credit card will be required as a guarantee.

Go by Bus /Tram / Metro:
If you ask at the ATAC booths in Piazza del Risorgimento outside Termini
Station, you’ll be given a detailed map of the public transport network.
Tickets can be bought in kiosks and metro stations. It is better to buy
these in advance. Most buses and trams run from 5.30am until midnight.
The Roman Metro goes round rather than through the historic centre. It
only has two lines which intersect at Termini central station.
And for the romantics among you, there are horse-drawn carriages to be
found stationed around St Peter`s Square, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona,
the Trevi Fountain and Via Veneto.
