seasonal ingredients. The main dish, pasta, can be eaten with a range of
basic Italian essentials-olive oil, herbs, parmesan or mozzarella. Meal

Many restaurants close in August, and are often closed on Sunday evenings.
It is therefore best to reserve for Saturday and Sunday lunch.
Here are just a sample of the many restaurants to dine in while staying
in Rome:
Caffetteria Poppea
Via dei Chiavari, 62
06 68 80 19 50
Closed Monday
Under the bizarrely-lit plexiglass floor, you can just make out Roman
ruins. The stencilled wall motifs imitating the frescoes at Pompeii, the
faded tints of the furniture make this restaurant one of the best in the
area.
La Taverna da Giovanni
Via del Banco di santo Spirito, 58
06 686 15 12
Closed Monday
This medieval-style tavern is a fitting place to eat after a visit to
the Castel Sant`Angelo. The charcuterie comes from the Abbruzzi and the
roast lamb and various cod dishes are delicious.
La Caffetteria
Piazza di Pietra, 65
06 679 81 47
Closed Sun. in the summer
This is a good place to come for a speedy lunch. Try the pizza di scarola
or have baked pasta with grated cheese. The deserts are devine- try the
sfogliatella or the pasticiotto. All amidst faded elegance and with old-style
service.
Cantina Cantarini
Piazza Sallustio, 12
06 485 528
Closed Sun.
This is a popular local restaurant tucked away on a small square and serving
excellent food. Meat is served from Mon.-Fri. and fish on other days.
The specialities are from the Marche region: Vegetables and fritto misto
(squid and shrimps) .And the friendly attitude of the waiters is thrown
in for free!
